About Adult Behind-the-Wheel

Behind-the-Wheel is a course with 14 mandatory 50-minute periods of in-car instruction. The class is divided into 7 days, and each day is 50 minutes of driving and 50 minutes of observing another student. The observation periods are required and cannot be waived. The road test is given on the last day of the course. Adults who pass the road test receive an adult waiver certificate that must be submitted to the DMV for a driver's license.

The course fee is $400

The deposit fee is 50% ($200).

Student Eligibility

You must be age 18 and older.

You must have a Virginia learner's permit.

You must have a Driver's Education Course certificate. Never took the course? No problem! Click here to register for our online driver's education course.

You must have a MINIMUM of 12 hours of driving practice. This course is not for new or learning drivers! You must already know how to drive.

You must be a first-time driver's license applicant. You must not have failed the DMV road test three times. You must not have had your driving privileges suspended or revoked.

Adult Waiver Certificate

The driving school cannot issue a driver's license to an adult. The instructor will issue an adult waiver certificate.

It is your responsibility to submit this certificate to the DMV either online or in person to be issued a driver's license.

If you submit it online, you will not receive a temporary driver's license.

In-person Enrollment

You must schedule an appointment before coming to our office for in-person enrollment.

All required documents will need to be presented or submitted. The deposit amount is due at this time as well (cash, money order, or card).

I received my Adult Waiver certificate. How do I submit it to the DMV for a driver's license?

The DMV has three methods available for adult waiver certificate submission.

The fastest and easiest way to submit the waiver is to submit it online. You can upload your documents electronically by visiting www.dmvNOW.com/adultwaiver. Uploads must be legible images of the original documents.

You can mail the original certificate with a Driver's License and Identification Card Application to the Driver's License and ID Card Work Center in Richmond. This method, depending on how it was shipped, can take 2 weeks or more.

You can make an appointment to visit a DMV Customer Service Center by visiting www.dmvNOW.com/appt. Walk-in service is available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. *This method is the only one that results in a temporary driver's license which allows you to drive until your official driver's license arrives in the mail.
