The online driver improvement clinic or defensive driving course is an eight-hour course, including the final test, and is designed to rehabilitate problem drivers. The course must be completed in its entirety before the issuance of a certificate of completion.
The online driver improvement course and the final test must be completed through a DMV-licensed online driver improvement clinic. No paper test is permitted.
To benefit from the course, you must be able to work independently and be comfortable with using a computer.
If you are required to attend a commercial driver improvement clinic, then this computer-based course will not satisfy a driver improvement clinic requirement. You must satisfactorily complete a clinic that provides CDL classroom instruction.
The Spanish version of the course is a separate listing in the drop-down menu for Select your Course or Test: labeled "Driver Improvement (en español)"
You will see the option when you set up your student account for online access.
Your court may or may not accept the certificate of completion for this computer-based course. It is your responsibility to determine whether your court accepts courses taken at online traffic schools.
Customers directed by the court must provide documentation from the court before safe driving points can be awarded.
The certificate of completion will be electronically transmitted to all individuals upon successful completion of the course within 24 hours.
The DMV standardized certificate, "Online Driver Improvement Clinic Certificate of Completion (DIC 552B)" is the only document that will be accepted by the Department and the Courts as proof of completion of an online driver improvement clinic.
Student identification will be verified throughout training and prior to taking the final test to ensure that the person taking the course is the same person taking the final test.

The Virginia DMV uses a point system to rate drivers. You receive demerit points for unsafe driving and safe driving points for good driving.
Demerit points are assigned when you are convicted of a traffic violation. The demerit points associated with a conviction remain valid for two years from the date you commit the offense. Different violations carry different point assignments, depending on the seriousness of the offense.
Drivers who are DMV directed or who have volunteered may receive 5 points upon completion. The maximum number of positive points you can have on your driving record is five. You may take the course for points every 24 months.
If the certificate is presented to DMV, it must be printed on 8.5" x 11" plain white bonded paper. DMV will not accept certificates printed on color or specially designed paper or paper with any form of an advertisement on the front or back of the certificate. DMV will not accept any certificates that have been altered in any way. When we email your certificate, we will also send the printing instructions.
Only if the DMV has requested that you give them the certificate. The driving school will electronically submit your completion to the DMV. Your completion of the online driver improvement clinic will be posted to your driving record within 24 hours of the completion date of the course.
