About the Online Driver's Manual Course
The online driver's manual course is an eight-hour course based on the Virginia Driver's Manual and is designed to better prepare individuals for the general knowledge test. The course must be completed in its entirety prior to the issuance of a certificate of completion.
The course is available to teens and adults.
The course fee is $100
Student Eligibility
To benefit from the re-examination online course, you must be able to work independently and be comfortable with using a computer.
You must have attempted and failed the knowledge test three (3) times.
You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old. If you are under age 18, you must present your driver education certificate of completion.
Student Identification
Student identification will be verified throughout training and prior to taking the final test to ensure that the person taking the course is the same person taking the final test.
Electronic Certificate
The certificate of completion will be electronically transmitted to all individuals upon successful completion of the course within 24 hours.
The DMV standardized certificate, "Online Driver's Manual Course Certificate of Completion (DTS 8E)" is the only document that will be accepted by the Department and the Courts as proof of completion of an online driver's manual course.
Inactive Student Accounts
Student accounts are considered "inactive" when one of the statements below is true:
- The student set up their student account but has not completed any session of coursework in 365 days.
- The student has not completed a session of coursework in 365 days.
- The student completed the course but has not scheduled a final exam in 180 days.
If a statement is true, then the student account will be deleted. When deleting a student account, the student's login id, validation answers, and course progress will be deleted.

After registration is completed, you will receive a welcome email with a direct link to the course. Use the link or copy and paste it into a browser to return to your online session.
Complete the course at your own pace. You can save your progress, exit, and return to the course at any point as many times as needed. We only keep your account active for up to a year. If it's been over a year and your account has been inactive for months, the account will be deleted.
After your completion of the course, the certificate will be electronically transmitted (email) within 24 hours. If you complete the course during office hours, you will receive the certificate the same day. The delivery is not immediate. A staff member creates the certificate.
